Sylvie McClay

I find that any one type of paint or technique is not enough for me. Each of my works evolve through many layers of water colour, gouache and the finest Swiss colour pencils, engraved intermittently with a pen nib and revisited many times before I am happy with the outcome.

I am fascinated with the colours and texture of feathers and fluff, the character of individual birds and the behaviour of each species. Together these aspects form the ‘life essence’ of a bird, or those things that define it from others. I strive to capture this essence as a snapshot of our daily experiences in native bird rehabilitation.

As long as I am able to pick up a paintbrush there will always be birds to paint. What a happy thought!
