Rachel Howell

I am inspired by the atmospheric landscape of the Tasmanian wilderness and my passion is being able to share the emotive qualities of colour, light and form as I paint the terrain of this beautiful Island State.

The artist Sydney Long influenced me. I love the light that Long achieved within his work and the interesting colours in his shadows. I also admire artists such as Geoff Dyer and Philip Wolfhagen, Maxwell Wilks and Alvaro Castagnet.

Calling myself a colourist, I love pushing the colour, or greying it off in different ways. I enjoy using impasto mediums, even glass beads to get different texture. I tend to build thick paint on both my pastels and oils in layers so that I can see hints of what lies before and love the capacity of oil, pastel and watercolours to create soft edges and blend.
